STRICTLY KINGS AND BETTER
This interview with Sky One was done telephonically since I failed to hook up with him at shows etc. Seems like I caught the bra in a solid state of mind as you'll no doubt see.
SO WHEN DID YOU START WRITING?
in about 1989.
WHO OR WHAT INFLUENCED YOU, INSPIRED YOU TO START?
Peer pressure and alkahol.....nah just kidding. spraycan art ,the book, stuff by Mode 2 and Gogga (a Cape Town writer) the stuff I saw him do......old London styles, block characters.
SO DO YOU SPRAY BY YOURSELF OR WITH A CREW?
I spray mostly by myself but I spray with T.V.A ( Falco and Tony), maybe with Mak-1 time and again.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY YOUR STYLE IS?
I do what I feel...like if I feel like doing blockletters that day, I do it, you know. I don't conform to one style, but you'll be able to see my style.
YOUR BEST PIECE TO DATE?
It hasn't happened yet. everything I've done thus far I could always improve on, nuthin really stands out yet.
YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOU DON'T HAVE A FAVOURITE PIECE ?
That would have to be the one they painted over.
WHERE'D YOU DO THAT ONE ?
Somerset West , but I dont wanna talk about it, too many painful memories y'know.
ANY ARTIST OUT THERE, WHOSE WORK YOU LIKE ?
Well I respect all artists work. You can never say one is better than the other, there's a difference between respect and admiration. I admire stuff by, Diam and Mess(delta) CMP & Spin, Mode 2, Dash & Shime (Australian writers). At the moment tho I'm influenced by anything I consider to be eyecatching. From magazine ads to graphic manuals, source books, the media.... movie posters. But mainly characters and portraits are my thing.
DO YOU HAVE ANY WORDS OF ADVICE FOR THE UP-AND -COMING WRITERS?
All I can say is, keep the dream alive, don't stop doin' it. None of us is at a stage where we can diss anotha guys work. Just keep it alive. You won't be able to see it now, but 25 years down the line we'll all look back at it. You'll be defining the artform in your own lifetime. As for me, I wont stop till I'm 60, just look at futura 2000 he's 40 and still goin.
A DEFINITION OF GRAF/AEROGLYPHICS:
It's a way of life, something your can't take away. It started as a stress reliever (guess this is personal - ED) It's as natural as going to the toilet and you know there comes a time when you're done potty training. (mad props for that analogy) It's part of who you are, something you love so much you'll, sacrifice anything to do it (even time with your girl?). Graf unifies where rap music breaks down!
