Workshop, in honour of South Africa's Reconciliation Day

Hlengiwe Mkhize, South Africa’s Ambassador to the Netherlands

The South African Mission, in The Hague, announces a workshop , in honour of South Africa's Reconciliation Day , on the 12th of December 2006.

The day's event is being held in commemoration of South Africa's National Reconciliation Day . This day was endorsed after decades of racially based prejudice, discrimination and State orchestrated gross human rights violations, as officially exposed by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The aim of the workshop is to share lessons learned in managing transitions in South Africa, from the divisions of the past, to a democratic and human rights-centered State.

The participation of diplomats from other regions, like Europe, Middle East and Latin America, will further enrich the workshop by sharing lessons learned from other related but different situations.
In The Hague, deliberations will add value to the diplomatic community's on-going discussions on notions of justice, reconciliation and peace.

The workshop topic will, inevitably, have a bearing on the challenges of the International Criminal Court. The latter's mandate, as protected in the Rome Statutes, is to end impunity, by indicting and holding trials for political leaders, and all other commanders of armed forces, who are accused of having committed serious crimes against humanity.
A related aim is to explore how a tendency to ignore women's reconciliatory strengths, during the post-conflict reconstruction phase, may sustain a hegemony of power and dominance, as opposed to a search for friendships, openness and cooperation. The former position (power and dominance) tends to create the socio-political climate which is conducive to a divided society and all other associated social ills.

The special guest for the workshop will be Mr Roelf Meyer. Mr Meyer played a crucial role in the peaceful resolution of the political conflict between the National Party Government and liberation movements represented by Mr Cyril Ramaphosa of the African National Congress.

The embassies of Guatemala and France, as well as the office of the International Criminal Court's Prosecutor will also participate and share their various experiences.
Invited participants are, amongst others, human rights activists and practitioners, academics, policy makers, representatives of victim support groups, the media and the Faith community.
