Three new ASC publications

ASC Research Report no. 84

Late 2006 three new Research Reports have been published by the African Studies Centre: on Rockart in Malawi, on Trade Liberalisation in Southern Africa and on Microfinance, Rural Livelihood and Women's Enpowerment in Uganda
Leslie F. Zubieta
The rock art of Mwana wa Chentchere II rock shelter, Malawi. A site-specific study of girls' initiation rock art.
No. 83, Leiden: African Studies Centre, 2006, € 10,00
This book offers new insights into the rock art of south-central Africa; specifically on what has been termed the White-spread eagled Tradition. This tradition has been attributed to the ancestors of what we know in the present as the Chewa people and has a special link to their girl's initiation ceremonies. The author makes use of recent social theories to analyse the links between the rock art and the ceremony and provides new interpretations on the meanings of such paintings.

Sam van der Staak

Trade liberalisation and financial compensation. The BLNS states in the wake of the EU-South African trade and development agreement
No. 84, Leiden: African Studies Centre, 2006, € 10,00
This book discusses the fate of Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland (BLNS) following the 1999 free-trade agreement between the European Union and South Africa. The study clarifies the links between trade liberalisation and financial compensation, and their longer-term implications for BLNS countries' economic relations with the EU.

Alfred Lakwo

Microfinance, rural livelihoods, and women's empowerment in Uganda
No. 85, Leiden: African Studies Centre, 2006, € 15,00
This book is about empowerment evaluation of microfinance policy. It explored the notion that microfinance is a double-goal panacea to poverty reduction and women's empowerment. The study shows that despite microfinance being a good catalyst for women's empowerment, it is inadequate to meet people-desired poverty reduction.
