Online African Studies Thesaurus launched
Education & Sciences, 25 Jan 2007 - African Studies Centre

The African Studies Centre Library in Leiden has launched its new African Studies Thesaurus

Developed as an indexing and retrieval tool for the ASC library collection, the African Studies Thesaurus covers the broad field of African studies, with an emphasis on the social sciences and humanities. It contains some 5,200 English descriptors (or preferred terms) and an additional 6,900 non-preferred terms which guide the user to preferred terms. Specific Africa-related descriptors include the names of countries and regions, ethnic groups, African languages, African polities and political parties in Africa.

The African Studies Thesaurus was completed at the end of 2006 and replaces the numerical classification system previously used by the ASC library for subject indexing. It is the culmination of a project designed to transform the ASC library catalogue into a more user-friendly bibliographical tool in the field of African Studies and improve national and international subject access to Africa resources. With the African Studies Thesaurus the ASC Leiden also aims to facilitate the identification of relevant indexing terminology and provide a tool for managing African Studies information resources in general. The thesaurus will be continually updated and improved by the ASC library staff.

More about the thesaurus
The African Studies Thesaurus has been constructed by the Library, Documentation and Information Department of the African Studies Centre Leiden. All subject codes previously assigned to titles in the ASC catalogue have been converted into thesaurus descriptors. At present, thesaurus terms are displayed alphabetically, but a systematic display of terms in broad subject categories is envisaged in the future.
