Beauty, a black perspective
Arts, 27 Sep 2006

With ‘Beauty, a black perspective’ Nakedi Ribane wrote an absolute bestseller. Ribane focuses on the beauty industry in relation to the emancipation of blacks in a society of apartheid.

She takes the reader on a journey through the South African history and politics from the unusual perspective of the beauty industry. It celebrates the inspirational role of beautiful and courageous black women, especially models and beauty queens. It also looks at the business of beauty and recounts the struggles and successes of black practitioners trying to make it in this competitive sector. The book is based on extensive research and on Ribanes personal experiences in the industry. Many anecdotes and a charming, humoristic writing style make this social and political analysis fascinating reading. Nakedi Ribane was a leading fashion model in the 1980s, actress, political activist, agency boss and fashion & beauty editor. She has performed extensively in the South African fashion trades, in international modelling and has been active in every aspect of the beauty industry. She co-owned one of the very few successful black modelling agencies in South Africa. She is ideally placed to offer a intriguingbehind-the-scenes look at one of the most under-rated yet influential industries of our time.
