Atenciosamente,

Joke D’haese e Elke Van Der Kelen

Im a graphic design student in England and became fascinated with the concept of Arms into Art since I saw Kesters Throne of weapons on display in the British museum. I don't see how anyone could dispute that these sculptures are art as they are both inspiring and are true to life expressions of horror in the most stunning, provoking yet sensitive way.

Hello,
I am an artist living in Oneonta, NY. A small college town set among the Catskill mountains of NY. There is a burgeoning art community here. Singers, painters, sculturs, musicians, dancers. You name it. I work for a goup called UCCCA-Upper Catskill Community Councel of the Arts, and teach through them.
I was watching a program about what steps are being taken to help bring Mozambique back to the wonderful place that it should be. (I'm also an animal lover.) I decided to go online and see what else was going on, and found your amazing site. I am completely overwhelmed by it. To create things of such beauty from the ugliest things ever made by man, is, to say the least, admirable. I have forwarded the site to my contact at UCCCA. They are a very small organization, but who knows? Maybe someone there knows someone... etc..I would love to see your works come to our town. To the artists; Your work is outstanding. Best to you, and to all those rebuilding this gorgeous land. Sue M.

Hi,
I really liked your website and the work you do. I am actually preparing a movie on the relationship between weapons and art. And in this optic your work really interrest me, so i wanted to get in touch with you to know if i could integrate your group in my project. This is quite urgent, because i have a deadline in the middle of april. So if you are interested and want to know more about it, please contact me as soon as possible. If other artists working on the weapon want to contact me too they are welcomed.
Thanks a lot.
Sincerly yours,

On a visit to Maputo in Jan 2002, I walked away with a great piece of art created by Fiel. The hospitality and kindness of the people at Nucleo de Arte and of Mozambique will stay with me. Wish the best to Fiel,Viler and Serjo. Though the task of getting the chair to London was a difficult one, only by your help was it made possible and is greatly admired today. I am looking for sculptors who would be interested in participating in a program to transform defused landmines into musical instruments.

I am a part of a Canadian musician's collective called the Teargas Recording Tree, a network of artists with a common goal of using our art to bring challenging topics to the forefront of our culture.

Mine clearing agencies are overwhelmed by the immensity of their workload and so they depend upon support from citizens around the globe - we hope to bring these facts to light in a creative and engaging way.

We have a small team of electronics engineers, bronze-workers and an assembly team ready to go to work installing effect-wiring in place of explosives. The trouble is, recycling actual landmines is not only impractical, it is illegal (with good reason). This means we are in need of realistic replicas. The final goal is to distribute these instruments to world-famous musicians along with a challenge to help work to spread awareness of the landmine crisis.
I dearly hope that at the very least a site administrator might write me back with contact information of current weapons-related sculpture collaboration programs.

If anyone is interested in this project at all, please contact me!

I live in one of the most heavily armed states in the United States. My country has more imprisoned per capita than any other country in the world. Listen, world, there is a lot of fear and confusion here. Most of us (in the U.S.) are actually pretty kind, but there is also a lot of confusion, despair and ignorance. Don't buy into the myth of the American dream. Support your own local economies, farm organically, conserve your resources, support the rights and dignity of all peoples. Many of us here are trying to do the same. Your sculptures are teachers. With Love, Franka.

Good work, thank you for making it available on the web. I am interested in this concept as I wish to develop a project regarding landmines and cluster munitions. I would be interested in discussing this further with any interested parties.

Very interesting art. I hope that your governments allow the people economic and political freedom with the necessity to own firearms. In some cases it is necessary for people to have firearms in order to ensure that the government does not become some sort of extreme right wing or leftwing dictatorship. Best of luck to you all.

Hi Guys. I would like to congratulate you on your original response to removing weapons from society, through art. I am extremely interested in conflict and art, and I am currently making a sculture out of a fridge - using news paper cuttings that depict images of conflict. The fridge serves as a metaphor for the 'consumerism of conflict' through disposable media i.e. Newspapers and I hope to display it in a local exhibition. Once again, I am delighted that your organisation is committed to making sure creative art work out of such destructive materials.
Best regard

I am an Afrikaans speaking South African leading a social upliftment project by the name of Carebique in the Manica province of Mozambique. I was inpired and encouraged by these fine works of art. It is my hope to see Mozambique again in the proud state that is still reflected in the spirit of it's people.

Impressive and very moving. I was a medical cooperante stationed in Beira 1982-84. These works of art had a very personal meaning for me. They transmit a sense of hope and even playfulness out of so much suffering and destruction.

I found this art work very creative...
considering what it is made of.I served
with the U.S MARINES in the vietnam war
in 1967 ... ak-47s,rpd's,rpg's&B-40's.I
never looked at these weapons the same
way. I feared their sound having to be
on the receiving end...I feel good to
see something positive come out of what
they were intended for.

This is the most moving and fantastic exhibition I have ever seen. I have worked for many years in war affected zones and this exhibition is one of the most incredible visible testamonies of the resilience of human beings and Mozambicans in particular. It shows the power of the human spirit and the creativity and ingeniousness of a community who despite all the hardships they have gone through can re-imagine beauty, grace and hope out of the worst of destruction. The shaping of these most beautiful forms out of the materials of mass destruction is a triumph of humanity, a triumph for Mozambicans who say "we will not be defeated by evil and war, we will live, we will overome!'' thank you.

I am enlightned by your perspective of modern art forms displayed in this alchemic exhibition of weapons transformed into expressive works. The values are indespensable in our acheiving of world peace, human rights, and a 'New World Order', one in which weapons here are impugned as possibly relegated to a lesser role in our international community and eventually because of human evolution as of little use , unless absolutely necessary. Congratulations and good luck in all future endeavors.

I am a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point. As a Portuguese concentrator, I am working on a presentation to my class, Civilization of the Portuguese Speaking World (LP482).
The art and the people behind the art are an inspiration to me and, I will share my research with my class. The art is eye cathing and I think that the same thing done with AK47's need to be done withe weapons in the inner cities where gun violence is destroying blacks in America.
Like I said before, the art and the sculptors are and inspiration. How can I get more info about this or purchase some of the art.... I want to help, so let me know how I can do so....

I never thougt that arms could be used for art. I´m very surprised about the strength and expression of this art. I guess most people that check this side ain`t down with killing and destruction Those weakheads that kill and destroy are hardly reachable. The only way to get fucking weapons off this beautiful planet is to raise consciousnes. Therefore all sane humans should work for the evolution of the mind. That means you have to take care of what happens around you and get up to act.
Thanx for your powerful art! Stay strong! Peace and respect from Germany. Manuel

I have read about your exhibition in a German news magazine. Please let me thank you for something really amazing. I have learned from my German father, who was a teen during second world war in Germany, to hate weapons. The German goverment forced me to join the army in the 80s and how to use weapons. This at a time where most of the people in Europe had no interest whatsoever in wars. I still hate weapons and must admit I am far away from understanding that goverments force people to use or practice weapons/war. But I am far away from real war zones too (even Yugoslavia). Your exhibition is to me a milestone in how artist express their will to fight against the unbelievable. Thanks for making this available.

Reading the article in the New York Times about Arms into Art was somewhat like finding my art soulmates. The sculpture that is being created has been inspired by such significant personal meaning.
Although the inspiration for my artwork has not come from war, it is nonetheless extremely personal. I, too, use welded steel to express my narratives.
Thank you for sharing your art with me, and I hope I can share mine with you:

Congratulations on such a wonderful exhibit and thanks to the NY Times for covering it. Here at Exploris we are a new museum devoted to global education and one of our keen interests is recycled art because it crosses our core areas of sustainable living, cultural geography, global communication and global economics. We have recycled art from Senegal, figures from Chad made from shell casings, scissors made from artillery shells from Vietnam. We would be very interested in learning more about your organization and to provide links from our web pages. Again, congratulations to all involved for such wonderful, imaginative work.

I can not see or hear anything from these pieces but the cries of the ones that were brutally killed or wounded by them. You can dress them up in a different way but they are still weapons of mass murder. Would not a complete recycleing of them by fire have transformed them in a more pure way? When a sword is beaten into a plow shear one can look and never have known the former use. Would you make a work of art out of a weapon that killed your loved ones? Put it on display for all to see? I think not.

I am part of the Kentuckiana (Kentucky and Indiana, USA) Interfaith Council and we are addressing gun violence in our community and the country as a whole. I am heading up an Art Task force whose primary focus is the same as this new exhibit. "Guns to Plowshares" envisions works of art, functional or visual, created from disabled guns. We are in the planning stages and would love to speak with someone about your experience. Perhaps international cooperation? If anyone responds to guestbook entries, please let me know. I'll try to get in touch in other ways, too. What a beautiful project ...

As a sculptor in the US it is a wonderful priviledge to see the work of artists who truly have something to say. American sculpture is so often without meaning. It is sad to think that perhaps without hardship and suffering, creativity cannot thrive. My best wishes to you all. Please send your work to exhibit in the USA. We need it.

I am an African-american,and I think that it is a wonder thing to see that my brothers from the mother land,is first of all getting exposure of there art and them selves, I've often had questions about the African Masks and other African art. Such as who are the artist and why aren't they exposed to world alone with there work? But no one seem to know, are care to know.
So I just want to thank all of you guys for turning negative thing into positives, not giving up on your dreams and a very special thank you the Europeans who have made it possible for the world to see that there are some positives things happening in your country.

I love art. All art. And when I saw an article with pictures about your exhibition, Arms Into Art, on the New York Times website, I thought it was wonderful. I once heard someone who is a recovering alcoholic and who had a horrendous story of her life prior to sobriety, end a speech with "...turn our battle scars into works of art." If only we could all do this all over the world. And here you all have done it. Thank you for the beauty and the inspiration.

What a pleasure to find your work featured in the New York Times, then so beautifully presented on this Web site! I have known for a long time about this work and the related guns-to-toys inititiative of the Christian Council of Mozambique, whose staffer Jacinto Muth was among pioneers. I mourn his untimely death, and see this art as a marvelous tribute to his vision. All the best!

This is some of the freshest and most interesting work I have ever seen. The ideas are original and the materials used are the absolute best. Recently I revisited the Nucleo group in Maputo. Most of the exhibited sculptures have been sold. It turned out the artists still make these sculptures. Also in 2000 a workshop with a Canadian organisation will be held. One big organisation in Denmark showed interest to bring over a physical exhibition. If so groups in Holland and Austria are interested to participate in organizing presentations. For those who wish more information just contact Africaserver.

BOM SUCESSO!

Somehow the fact that these objects are made of weapons preoccupies me. For me it is hard to see them without thinking about the part these weapons have played in a man's life.Although the objects are non-realistic, an abstraction, I can sense a reality and that is its history. This art shows the ability of people to move on in their live in a new direction.Although I am not an art critic, but a student, I can see the qualitie of the objects. Maybe it is an idea to show this exposition also abroad as art being art, but also to make people aware of what is/was going on?

It shows the maturity of african artists being able to articulate their reality through a different media. I hoped to get more information but maybe I do not know how to get it. Information like what inspired them to put up such a nice exposition. Yes Mozambique has gone through a lot historically and for me what really moved is how these artists are rewriting their history in such a powerful way! I just want to point out that they must realize their power and use it to develop mozambique beyond what it is today. It is high time we become writers of our own destiny and Art is the most powerful tool that can be used. Keep up the good work do not look back, I wish you could take that exposition back to other african countries as well to realise what it is, is war! I will always keep checking for something new! Good Luck...

Your truly have struck a chord in the heart of an African.

For me, these pieces of art typify the resilience of Africa ... a continent, which despite the hardships its people have endured, remains a place of undefinable beauty .... a unique spirit which this art has captured.

My compliments for the Nucleo artists and for the works they have created for this special occasion. It is a beautiful manifestation of the unique power that artists have to transform the material into the symbolic in a way that reaches straight to our hearts. For Hivos, who is supporting Nucleo de Arte since 1996 through the Hivos Culture Fund, the initiative of the Africa Server was immediately welcomed as it enables Nucleo to attract worldwide attention for the exhibition and to inspire other artists around the world.
