Bezuidenhout wekt improvisatievermogen van grote componisten tot leven. Hoewel alle noten netjes genoteerd zijn, is het hoofdthema van het recital van de Zuid-Afrikaanse pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout ‘improvisatie’. Met zijn fortepiano neemt Bezuidenhout de luisteraar mee in het hoofd van Beethoven, Schubert en Haydn en beroemde composities die al improviserend ontstonden. Beethovens romantische Pathétique en Haydns Variaties in f klinken op de fortepiano van Bezuidenhout ongelofelijk fris, alsof ze ter plekke ontstaan. Kristian Bezuidenhout baarde in 2014 opzien in het Muziekgebouw door met het Orkest van de 18e Eeuw alle pianoconcerten van Beethoven op fortepiano uit te voeren. Het bevestigde vooral zijn status als een van de beste fortepianisten van dit moment. De leerling van de legendarische Malcolm Bilson geldt al sinds hij in 2001 het fortepianoconcours van het festival Musica Antiqua in Brugge won als ‘the finest exponent of the fortepiano’ (The Herald).

Musical globetrotter and top guitarist tells the story of the blues in a musical ‘one-man show’. As a teenager, guitarist Joep Pelt went to the south of the US to learn the blues. He met old heroes, who taught him the typical Delta blues style. Pelt hopelessly fell in love with the blues and decided to dig deeper. In his musical one-man show ‘From Mali to Mississippi’ Joep tells the story of the West African roots of the blues, traveling along the Caribbean slave routes to her birth in the south of the US, only to see her change the history of music forever. With his stories, photos, historical images and of course many songs that he collected along the way, Joep takes you on a special musical adventure.

The African Mamas brengen in hun nieuwe theaterconcert samen met Leoni Jansen een ode aan de zangeres die Zuid-Afrika hoop gaf. Zoals Nelson Mandela de vader van Afrika wordt genoemd, zo is Miriam Makeba ‘Mama Africa’. Met muziek, zang en inspirerende verhalen vertellen ze over Makeba’s strijd tegen apartheid, waardoor zij 30 jaar lang verbannen werd uit haar thuisland.

Op het ritme van haar hits als Pata Pata, Malaika en de Clicksong brengen de African Mamas de kracht en de moed van hun boegbeeld tot leven. Alle kanten van haar kleurrijke bestaan komen aan bod: haar muzikale samenwerking met Harry Belafonte en Paul Simon, haar vijf huwelijken en haar overlijden in 2008, twee dagen nadat ze afscheid nam van haar Nederlandse fans. Nog altijd wordt ze herinnerd als de vrouw die de Afrikaanse muziek de wereld in stuurde en die Zuid-Afrika in zware tijden perspectief bood.

Daarom heet het concert ‘Siyabonga Miriam Makeba’, oftewel; ’Dankjewel Miriam Makeba’.
