PhD defence Mandipa Ndlovu - Myth, Memory, and Political Settlements in the City: Compounded Disadvantage and a Path for Plausible Futures

On Wednesday 23 September 2026 from 1 to 2 pm, Mandipa Ndlovu will defend her dissertation Myth, Memory, and Political Settlements in the City: Compounded Disadvantage and a Path for Plausible Futures at Leiden University. This dissertation interrogates the structural, symbolic, and futures-facing dimensions of urban disadvantage in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second city. It argues that the city’s marginalisation is not simply the result of economic decline nor poor governance, but part of a wider “architecture of disadvantage”: a system built over time through colonial legacies, post-independence political settlements, centralised power, militarised governance, patron-client networks, spatial inequality, and entrenched myths about the city.
Echoes of In*dependence
Cabo Verde en Suriname vierden afgelopen jaar vijftig jaar onafhankelijkheid. Congo vierde vijfenzestig jaar onafhankelijkheid. Ghana speelde een belangrijke rol in de onafhankelijkheidsbewegingen. De tentoonstelling Echoes of In*dependence onderzoekt wat onafhankelijkheid werkelijk betekent. Voor veel voormalige koloniën geldt immers: de vlag veranderde, maar de koloniale structuren bleven bestaan. Buitenlandse bedrijven profiteren vaak nog steeds van grondstoffen uit deze landen en economische ongelijkheid duurt voort.
Het Land van Hagelslag
Cacao, suiker en palmolie worden vaak geproduceerd op plantages waar mensen en natuur een hoge prijs betalen. De kunstenaars van CATPC maken deze realiteit zichtbaar en onderzoeken hoe het anders kan. Het collectief maakt beelden van klei die met behulp van 3D-technologie in Amsterdam worden gegoten in cacao, palmolie en suiker.

William Kentridge zal één van de grote tentoonstellingscircuits van Bozar inpalmen, in situ-werken creëren en een rijk, multidisciplinair programma persoonlijk cureren.
