concert: Mulatu Astatke (Ethiopië)

Mulatu Astatke staat bekend als de vader van de Ethiopische jazzmuziek, en dat is niet voor niets. Op alle belangrijke instrumentale albums uit de hoogtijdagen van de Ethiopische jazz in de jaren 70 speelt hij mee. De nu 74 jarige muzikant kreeg zijn muzikale vorming in Londen en New York, en in Boston was Astatke de eerste Afrikaanse student aan het gerenommeerde Berklee College of Music. Daar combineerde hij jazz, latin en traditionele Ethiopische muziek. Nog altijd inspireert zijn muziek menig muzikant en zijn liedjes worden dan ook veelvuldig als samples gebruikt door artiesten als Nas, Damian Marley en Kanye West. Bij het grote internationale publiek brak Astatke (opnieuw) door, toen vanaf eind jaren 90 de Ethio-jazz heruitgaven van de compilatieserie 'Éthiopiques' verschenen en zijn muziek in 2005 werd gebruikt voor de soundtrack van Jim Jarmusch' film 'Broken Flowers'. De afgelopen jaren volgende nieuwe albums en tours, samen met onder meer The Heliocentrics, Black Jesus Experience en Either/Orchestra.

Lionel Loueke (Benin)

Lionel Loueke, gitarist bij o.a. Herbie Hancock, presenteert muziek van zijn nieuwe album met zijn vaste band. Typisch West-Afrikaanse ritmes en melodieën uit zijn jeugd klinken door in de eigentijdse jazz van Lionel Loueke. Dit najaar verschijnt zijn nieuwe album waarop hij, naast bekende gastmusici, opnieuw samenwerkt met zijn oorspronkelijke trio en met saxofonist John Ellis, met wie hij ook in het Bimhuis zal optreden.

Let op! Dit concert is verplaatst van Paradiso Noord naar Bitterzoet. Reeds gekochte tickets blijven geldig. Mamadou Kelly speelde niet alleen in Ali Farka Toure's band, maar is ook een belangrijke muzikant in de groep van Afel Bocoum. Samen met hen heeft Mamadou de blauwdruk helpen vormen van de stijl die we kennen als desertblues. Nu is de virtuoze gitarist zelf het middelpunt van een groep. Met zijn band Ban Kai Na geeft Mamadou Kelly een nieuw soort verfijning aan de muziek uit Niafunke, Mali. In hun muziek weerklinken de wortels van de Amerikaanse blues en bluegrass, en die groovy, wiegende ritmes hebben een hypnotiserend effect op de luisteraar. Inmiddels heeft Mamadou Kelly drie albums uit, waarvan Politiki (2017) de meest recente is. Bezetting: Mamadou Kelly – gitaar, zang; “Hama" Sankare – kalebas; "Youro" Cisse - djourkel (soort eensnarige mandoline); Baba Traore - bas.

MÂÄK KOJO (20 jaar Mâäk!) - spirituele dialoog tussen rootsmuziek en avant-garde

Sinds enkele jaren combineert MÂÄK op bijna bovennatuurlijke wijze blaasinstrumenten, percussie en zang in tal van fijne muzikale projecten die diverse populaire tradities afwisselen met gedurfde avant-garde en improvisatie. Tijdens voorgaande projecten als ALMAJMAÂ (Gnawa of Morocco) en DJEKOULOU (Bambara hunters of Mali) ging MÂÄK al nieuwsgierig op zoek naar traditionele transcendentale muziek met een sterk therapeutisch aspect. Voor KOJO ligt de focus op de VODUN (a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, ... ), de heilige muziek uit het West-Afrikaanse Benin. Wederzijds respect en nieuwsgierigheid voor de artistieke identiteit en muzikale integriteit van de verschillende rijke groepen en culturen staat ook in dit nieuwe project centraal, op het kruispunt tussen strakke orkestratie en spontane improvisatie... .  Mâäk u op voor een wonderlijk spiritueel muzikaal gebeuren

Sioen Plays Graceland

In 1986 trok Paul Simon naar Zuid-Afrika, voor de opnames van het album 'Graceland'. Meer dan 20 jaar later ging ook Sioen naar het land van Nelson Mandela en gospel voor de opnames van 'Calling Up Soweto'. Sioen, in de voetsporen van Paul Simon... Sioen leerde het volledige album pas echt goed kennen toen hij zelf naar Zuid-Afrika trok. Op vraag van Oxfam ging hij in 2007 voor ‘One Day For Another World' (Gentse Feesten) een eerste keer naar Soweto, de bekendste township van Johannesburg. De interactie met plaatselijke muzikanten werkte zo aanstekelijk dat Sioen besliste om er een volledig nieuw album op te nemen, toevallig in dezelfde studio waar 'Graceland' werd ingeblikt.e staan. Sioen, die als geëngageerde singer-songwriter veel gelijkenissen vertoont met Paul Simon, werd in 2006 door Festival Van Vlaanderen gevraagd om het volledige album 'Graceland' te vertolken met zijn Zuid-Afrikaanse vrienden. Het concert werd lovend onthaald. Het Nieuwsblad kopte: 'Zuid-Afrika was nog nooit zo dichtbij'. En Sioen voegde er aan toe: 'Een droom die waarheid werd'. Nu dus ook bij ons. Voor de gelegenheid inviteert Sioen opnieuw de Zuid-Afrikaanse backing vocals uit Soweto, N'Faly Kouyaté  uit Guinea (Afro Celt Sound System) en Rony Verbiest op accordeon en saxofoon.
