45 pictures by photographers Jürgen Schadeberg (Germany/South Africa) and Louise Gubb (South Africa). Schadeberg featured Mandela in the 50s and 60s when he was working for Drum, an iconic anti-apartheid weekly, as well as in 1994 when the photographer accompanied Mandela to a visit to his former prison cell on Robben Island. As a press photographer Gubb featured Mandela after his release from prison and during his presidency (1994 – 1999).

The exhibition is an initiave by the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

This exhibition explores the life and times of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 – 2013) and marks the centenary of his birth. It provides insight into Mandela’s journey from young freedom fighter to becoming the inspiration for an international movement against South Africa’s violent and oppressive apartheid system, and an emblem of an ongoing struggle to build a more just and equitable world.

The upgraded Tata Madiba exhibition content and objects are meant to stimulate conversation about his life, struggles and extraordinary contribution to protection of South Africa’s rich biodiversity; but also connect to contemporary issues around conservation and sustainability.  The exhibition also includes the many species named after him and those he and his fellow prisoners may have encountered on Robben Island.  The exhibition includes as its central piece the iMadiba Project which is a participatory art project conceptualized and created by artist and photographer Erhardt Thiel. Seven of South Africa’s best comics re-unite on stage for one night only in the unforgettable Nelson Mandela Centenary 2018: A Night to Remember Comedy Show which takes place on Friday, August 24, at the Teatro at Montecasino. Produced by Real Concerts on behalf of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the event brings together Barry Hilton, Chris Forrest, David Kau, Marc Lottering, Nik Rabinowitz, Riaad Moosa and Tumi Morake. All appeared together in the hugely successful and ground-breaking 46664 It's No Joke nearly a decade ago. The MC for the evening will be Whackhead Simpson. (The 46664 campaign took its name from Mandela's Robben Island prison number; he was prisoner number 466, incarcerated in 1964). 2018 marks the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela who was born on July 18, 1918. Throughout the year, the Nelson Mandela Foundation – established by Mandela in 1999 after he stepped down as President of South Africa – will promote his legacy through a series of events and engagements. All proceeds from A Night to Remember Comedy Show will go to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Fokofpolisiekar (Fuck-off politieauto) werd in 2003 gevormd door vijf vrienden uit Bellville, Zuid-Afrika. Ze hebben zich vanaf het begin beziggehouden met het uitlokken van emoties en het doen oplaaien van discussies over gevoelige onderwerpen. Ze zijn geroemd om hun explosieve live optredens en rauwe on-stage energie maar hebben met hun provocerende teksten ook veel controverse veroorzaakt in Zuid-Afrika. Door de literaire gemeenschap wordt Fokofpolisiekar juist geroemd om hun intelligente, poëtische en bloedeerlijke teksten. Hun aanhoudende succes en populariteit overstijgt klasse, leeftijd en ras.
