18 July 2018 will mark the centenary of the birth of Nelson Mandela (1918-2013). This occasion will be celebrated around the world with lectures, concerts and debates. Mandela, former President of South Africa, received an honorary doctorate from Leiden University in 1999. The then Rector Magnificus Willem Wagenaar honoured Mandela as ‘a true defender of freedom.’

To celebrate the legacy of Nelson Mandela, Leiden University, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam - that has a long tradition of academic cooperation with South Africa through the South Africa VU Strategic Alliances (SAVUSA) programme - and the South African Embassy to the Netherlands are organising the ‘Celebrating Mandela 100’ event on 1 June, with a keynote lecture by Prof. Tom Lodge (University of Limerick, Ireland), author of the biography Mandela. A Critical Life (2006).

Op vrijdag 1 juni strijkt Afrolijk weer neer in Rialto voor de officiële vooraankondiging van World Cinema Amsterdam, het jaarlijkse filmfestival voor wereldcinema dat dit jaar weer in augustus in het filmtheater wordt gehouden. Dit keer hosten we de exclusieve Nederlandse première van The African Storm (L'Orage Africain, 2017, 89 min.), de nieuwe speelfilm van de Beninse regisseur Sylvestre Amoussou. Na de film, zo rond elf uur, is er een borrel in de foyer van Rialto met op de achtergrond fijne beats van onze Afrolijke DJ’s Joss-Flo Selecting.

Vanaf vrijdag 14 april kun je de grootste hedendaagse Pan-Afrikaanse fototentoonstelling genaamd AFROTOPIA bezoeken.

Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis van de biënnale is deze tentoonstelling te zien buiten Bamako. De tentoonstelling was eerder te zien tijdens de 11^e editie van de Afrikaanse fotobiënnale in Bamako. Het Afrika Museum voelt zich vereerd deze toonaangevende tentoonstelling te mogen tonen aan het Nederlandse publiek. 

Uit driehonderd inzendingen zijn werken van veertig hedendaagse Afrikaanse fotografen en kunstenaars geselecteerd die geïnspireerd zijn door het thema Afrotopia en de potentiële kracht waarmee Afrika kan bijdragen aan onze gezamenlijke toekomst. Hun werk toont nieuwe inzichten over het verleden, schijnt licht op het heden en biedt nieuwe perspectieven voor de toekomst.

Galerie Sanaa presents Young Utrecht Delight. Showing the combined but diverse work of young HKU alumni. Jessica Skowroneck shows pure paintings that radiates with light. RaQuel van Haver is interested in the interaction and abrasion between identity, background and ethnicity. Guy Vording looks for photographs and texts that almost always have to do with events where the control is lost. In the sculptural paintings of Cecilia Rebergen she searches for the boundaries of the painted object. Joyce Overheul creates and manipulates human behavior and confronts people with their own actions through multiple media. Benine du Toit analyses tensions, emotion and reluctance toward one another in South Africa. Mariaan van den Berg focuses on adaptability through her spacial works. The work of Robert Roest is visually rooted in both the contemporary world of new media as in the history of painting.
