In his work Stephen Ellis probed the continuing influence of indigenous religions and cultural idioms and understandings of power on contemporary politics in West Africa. In this memorial lecture named after Stephen Ellis, Prof. Emmanuel Akyeampong draws on his insights to explore the nexus of spirituality, culture, and political power in the connected lives of three first generation African nationalist leaders: Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, Sekou Touré of Guinea, and Leopold Senghor of Senegal. Mission-educated (Catholic) in the cases of Nkrumah and Senghor, with the former even considering a priestly vocation and the latter deeply influenced by his Catholic faith, the exigencies of political power and nation-building necessitated reaching out to different religious constituencies. Imagining the African nation-state opened doors to various ethnic cultural influences. These processes were not unambiguous, unsurprisingly, and this first generation of nationalist political leaders – in their experiments with secular, modern African nation-states – would bequeath multiple registers that continue to shape modern politics in contemporary Africa. Een swingende en uitbundige Zuid-Afrikaanse muziekbelevenis. Gelukkig komt ook deze winter South African Road Trip de Nederlandse theaters verwarmen. Met vrolijke songs, kwetsbare nummers, harmonieuze samenzang en opzwepende dans en muziek. Gebracht door de talentvolle mannen van het bekende Khayelitsha United Mambazo Choir, meerdere Xhosa zangeressen én Zuid-Afrikaanse muzikanten. Oogstrelende kostuums en een prachtig videodecor, met mini docu’s over het dagelijkse leven van de koorleden, maken het plaatje compleet. Bijzonder zijn de indringende, persoonlijke verhalen van de koorleden. Zij vertellen openhartig over hun leven in de township, een leven dat zo anders is maar toch ook zoveel overeenkomsten vertoont met dat van ons. Geboorte, liefde, dood: we maken het allemaal mee. Plezier, verdriet, hoop: het zijn universele gevoelens. Maar waar hoop je op als het perspectief op echte vooruitgang in je township klein is? Ubuntu, ‘ik ben omdat wij zijn’, is het credo dat de cast uitdraagt, een Afrikaanse Xhosa-levenswijze die ervan uitgaat dat alle mensen met elkaar verbonden zijn.

Vanaf 16 november tonen we in samenwerking met Cargo in Context de thematische tentoonstelling The Weight of Wonders rond het bijzondere artistieke traject On-Trade-Off dat is geïnitieerd door de kunstenaarsinitiatieven Picha (Lubumbashi, DRC) en Enough Room for Space (Brussel, BE). De expo laat het werk zien van o.a. Maarten Vanden Eynde & Musasa, Marjolijn Dijkman en Sammy Baloji.
Sammy Baloji, George Senga, Daddy Tshikaya, Musasa and Jean Katambu are amongst the DRC artists exploring the most important resource for ‘green energy’, lithium. But why are local communities neglected? A series of new individually and collectively made artworks are part of this project involving the Amsterdam-based Cargo in Context and Vlaams Cultuurhuis de Brakke Grond in collaboration with the Thami Mnyele Foundation and Amsterdam Art Weekend, the Lubumbashi Biennal, Galerie Imane Farès (France) and Contour Biennal Mechelen (Belgium). The research project was initiated by Picha in Lubumbashi and Enough Room for Space in Brussels. Senga is the winner of the 2019 Thami Mnyele Award.
