The Afro-European Sessions returns to explore what it means to be a person of African descent in Europe. As the last edition asked How do you create a sense of home while balancing two cultures?, this new edition goes a step further and centers around the question: How do we build unity among fragmented identities? Curated by Omek, OSCAM, Bijlmer Bookstore, and VPRO, the program brings together thought leaders, creatives, through conversations, art, music, and food. Inspired by the 6-part docu-series Afro-Europeans, produced by VPRO and broadcasted in fall 2024, the event series offers a space to connect, reflect, and imagine the future of Black identities in Europe.

Bombino, geboren als Omara Moctar in 1980 in Niger, is een Desert Blues gitarist en zanger die bekend staat om zijn unieke mix van rock, psychedelica en reggae. Zijn muziek eert de Sahara, de regio waar hij vandaan komt en is opgegroeid. Vorig jaar sloot hij Bridge Around Town af op het Wilhelminaplein, waar het publiek goed uit hun dak ging!

De achtkoppige Ghanese band Santrofi (vernoemd naar een mythische vogel) is een van de grote namen in de highlife, de combinatie van traditionele West-Afrikaanse ritmes met westerse jazz. Al vóór hun debuutalbum Alewa (2020) was de buzz rond Santrofi zo groot dat de band op festivals als WOMAD en Roskilde stond. Begin 2025 kwam het tweede album Making Moves – een prima titel, want vanaf de eerste maten van openingstrack Amina sta je al te dansen.
