Stilstaan is onmogelijk op de hypnotiserende, uitzinnige klanken van Ahmed Janka Nabay. In de jaren ’90 was de West-Afrikaanse zanger al een grote ster in zijn thuisland met zijn moderne interpretatie van de bubumuziek, de traditionele religieuze volksmuziek uit Sierra Leone. De oorspronkelijke geluiden van bamboescheuten en auto-onderdelen verving Janka Nabay door synthesizers en drummachines: een volksheld was geboren. Gedwongen zijn door burgeroorlog geteisterde thuisland te ontvluchten, kwam hij in 2003 terecht in New York. Samen met leden van indierock-groepen uit Brooklyn (Skeletons, Gang Gang Dance, Starring) houdt Janka Nabay zijn geliefde Bubu in ere, naadloos verweven met Afro-beat en psychedelische rock.

Many worlds flow smoothly together in the unconventional music of Shishani & the Namibian Tales. Vocalist, songwriter and guitarist Shishani combines the little known but rich tradition of her native Namibia with such western influences as soul and jazz. Traditional music from Namibia and other African regions forms the starting point for Shishani’s compositions. She sings her lyrics both in English and Oshiwambo, her mother’s native tongue. Rooted in deep traditions, though partly thanks to unexpected harmonies and rhythms the music of Shishani & the Namibian Tales sounds surprisingly contemporary and refreshing. Photo: Paolo Schneider
