Film screening: Biographies of Radicalization in the Sahel
Donderdag 19 September 2019 15:30 - 17:00

Research in social sciences and humanities is about humans, and social processes. When these are entangled in difficult situations this will have an effect on the researcher. The itineraries of people in Chad and Mali, both countries with histories of conflict and crisis, did not leave Boukary and Souleymane untouched. They lived through the stories of their informants and were touched by it in such a way that they started to understand the process of radicalization through which they went, even so that they sort of radicalized themselves. Souleymane and Boukary are both authors of chapters of the book Biographies of Radicalization, Hidden messages of social change. The book questions if radicalization as a process is not a necessary condition for social change that is so necessary in many countries in Africa. Speakers: Prof. Dr. Mirjam de Bruijn, Dr. David Ehrhardt (Leiden University) & Paul Litjens (Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Please register

In verschillende steden bestaan diverse bloeiende modescenes.

Congo Tales - Told by the people of Mbomo - Exhibition with photographs by Pieter Henket for Tales of Us

Congo Tales tells the stories and myths of the inhabitants of the Congo basin, the world’s second-largest tropical rainforest, after the Amazon. Tales of Us has been working on Congo Tales in this region of Africa for the past five years. The initiators behind the organisation – producers Eva Vonk and Stefanie Plattner – invited Dutch portrait photographer Pieter Henket to collaborate on the project. Working with local inhabitants, the team has created a large series of photographs which they are now using to draw attention to this largely unknown rainforest and those who call it home. Henket’s filmic and surrealistic portraits bring to life the magic and mysteries of this region, which is so important to the planet.
